This raises a carpenter's invoice the way a self-employed carpenter actually charges: a day rate for the days on the job, materials and fixings marked up from what you paid, the skip or waste run, travel where you charge it, VAT or sales tax if you are registered, the deposit the customer already paid, and the balance due. It is the arithmetic you do on the back of a timber invoice; the point is doing it the same way every time and ending on a figure the customer can pay.
Days on the job, not hours, unless you price by the hour
Most self-employed carpenters quote a day rate and most customers understand one, so the template bills labour as a day rate times days and takes half days. If you price by the hour, enter the hourly rate and the hours instead; the arithmetic is identical. What matters is that the labour line carries a rate and a quantity the customer can check against the days they saw you on site, because a single labour figure with no rate behind it is the line that gets argued.
Materials go on at your price, and the markup pays for the trips
The materials markup covers collection, the return of the wrong fixings, the offcuts you paid for and cannot use, and the extra trip when the merchant was short. Carpenters who charge materials at exactly what the merchant charged them are paid for none of that. The template asks for cost and markup so you can see the margin, and prints the resulting materials price as a single line; the customer sees what the materials cost them, not what they cost you.
VAT if you are registered, and the deposit before the balance
A VAT-registered carpenter charges VAT on labour and materials alike, and the invoice must carry the VAT number, which the paid plan prints. Below the threshold, or in a US state that does not tax labour, enter zero and the line disappears. The deposit is taken off last, and the invoice ends on the balance due, because a customer shown a total and then a deposit somewhere above it will pay the total or query it, and neither is what you wanted.

Is this carpenter invoice template free?

Should I show the materials markup?
No. Show the materials at the price you charge for them. The markup is how that price was arrived at, not a separate fee, and a line reading 'markup' invites a negotiation over a figure that pays for real costs. The template asks for both so you know your margin and prints only the price.
Do I charge VAT on materials if the customer bought them?
If the customer bought the materials themselves they are not on your invoice at all, so no. If you bought them, you charge VAT on the whole materials line if you are registered, whether or not the merchant charged you VAT. Enter only the materials you supplied; the template has no line for customer-supplied goods because there is nothing to charge for.
